The dinner and the sari must have finally made Radha a little happy, because a couple of days later, she came bounding up to me and said, ‘Why don’t you call your friends over on Friday night to our place? I will cook some nice mutton and chicken starters, you buy booze for them and just relax with them over Friday night till Saturday afternoon. I can go across and stay with Kaki.’
I stopped whatever I was doing (which was staring vacantly in space) and literally fell to the ground off the diwan. What! JOY! I wanted to smooch her. She seemed to be floating in an ethereal way, almost like an angel in pink, singing paeans to a TBNO!
The most sacred of sacred nights is The Boys Night Out (TBNO). It is a night of revelry, much drinking, some singing, some dancing, lots of bitching (about bosses, girlfriends, and the likes), reminiscing, puking, card games, more drinking and more puking. In short, you feel like you are ‘the king of the world’, you are the Batman, you are Mark Zuckerberg (if you’re the geeky type) or whatever.
TBNO defines you, makes you feel alive. Makes you feel non-alone, aligned to others, bonding with your buddies. Drinking and lots of drinking is possible only with true friends. Especially since the next morning, you should be able to face your good friend and smile at the memory of calling him a dog fucker to his face. Actually bitch fucker or some such canine bullshit. In addition, he shouldn’t be trying to strangle you at the same happy thought.
I couldn’t believe she was allowing me to have a night exclusively for myself with my guy friends. Was she the coolest girlfriend ever? This would make up for all the times my friends had excluded me. Once I invited them over, I would be back in their good books and have several nights out with the boys again.
I said a reverential ‘thank you’ to Radha and almost cried afterwards with happiness. Finally, composing myself, I started texting all my office friends and some college friends about this coming joyful Friday. I asked her, ‘How many joyful friends can I call?’ She said ‘What?’ I said, ‘I meant how many people?’ She asked me to decide and just tell her so she could cook accordingly.
The week passed quickly, even before I could say ‘Quikr’ (not paid plug), and soon it was the night of TBNO! Half the colleagues invited were coming straight from office with me and they manfully bought their own booze at the first wine shop we saw. Obviously, we also bought a few pints for the long drive back home, which we finished off in the cab. Menon also offered a pint to the cab driver, sharing his joy with the world at large. Thankfully, the cab driver refused and we had an uneventful drive back home. We also picked up chaknas, some fiery wasabi nuts to munch on, and finally reached our destination.
